Contributing to ISO/IEC Managing Activities

Japan contributes to the ISO/IEC managing activities through dispatching persons as senior officers and through participating in the upper level committees such as the Council Board or Technical Management Board.

As the senior officer of the IEC, Dr. Sei-ichi Takayanagi has been engaged in the IEC activities as the IEC President since 2002. Dr. Ryoiku Togei served as the Vice-President of the IEC from 1993 to 2000. In additon, Prof. Noboru Takagi chaired as the President of the IEC from 1977 through 1980. On the ISO side, as the senior officers of the ISO, for the first time of Japanese executive, Mr. Isamu Yamashita assumed the Presidency of the ISO from 1986 through 1988, and Mr. Akira Aoki acted as the Vice-President (Policy) of the ISO from 1998 through 2000.

Regarding the upper level committees of the ISO and IEC, JISC assumes the member of ISO Council (Mr. Masami Tanaka), IEC Council Board (CB) (Mr. Nobuo Yumoto) and IEC Standardization Management Board (SMB) (Mr. Koichi Mori) as automatically appointed members, and assumes the member of Technical Management Board (TMB) (Mr. Hiroo Wakai) currently.

In addition to contributing human resources, Japan fulfills its responsibilities by hosting conference of the ISO/IEC. The IEC General meeting was held in Kyoto in 1999, that was the 50th anniversary of the enactment of the Industrial Standardization Law. These Councils have already been held twice in Tokyo once in 1965 and again in 1983. The 13th ISO General Assembly was held in Tokyo in 1985.

Japan also contributes subscription dues to the fund of approximately 9 % to the ISO and 8 % to the IEC in 2002, as the high contributor as well as other major members.
