JIS Mark Certification Scheme under the Old Industrial Standardization Act

The JIS Mark Certification Scheme under the Old Industrial Standardization Act expired on September 30, 2008.

However, the Industrial Standardization Act does not prohibit business entities who had continued to hold the certification up until September 30, 2008 from shipping, even after October 1, their products that had been manufactured up until September 30, 2008 and that had been certified as conforming to the applicable JIS but were left as inventory.

Manufacturers and processors of products conforming to JIS, who have acquired certification from the competent minister or from a certification body accredited by the competent minister, may affix JIS marks on their products, packaging, containers, or invoices. They are also allowed to indicate their products’ conformity to JIS on their product catalogue or website so that they can prevent consumers from misunderstanding or confusing the officially certified products with similar products.

Products bearing these marks are so-called old JIS mark products. The products to which the old JIS Mark Certification Scheme is applicable are designated by the competent minister among JIS products, and are publicized in an official gazette.
